Hiking Bunda Mountain:

Although we were warned Bunda Mountain would be a strenuous hike, I was feeling confident in my capability since I hike fairly often. But within the first few steps, I was severely mistaken. Looking up the steep rock face, I questioned my ability to make it to the top.

As I struggled with every step, local children effortlessly ran ahead. When I learned that locals made the climb up and down multiple times a day, I was extremely humbled. Each step became a tribute to those who navigate the mountain daily.

While I was complaining about the lack of traction on my Hokas, a man passed by heading down the mountain in plastic flip flops. When I reached the top, my heavy breathing and exhaustion was in stark contrast to the locals rejoicing and attending church services.

Reflecting on our adventure, I realized that Bunda Mountain offered more than just physical exertion and great views—it provided a lesson in humility and resilience. The journey connected me with the strength and spirit of the local village. I gained a deep appreciation for their daily achievements and the mountain’s cultural significance. It also showed me what I’m capable of with a little determination, reminding me of the importance of perseverance and the value of shared celebrations at the summit.
