Mumbo Island, Lake Malawi:

As we arrived at Mumbo Island, I was prepared for the absence of wifi and cell service, but having to surrender my phone to our hosts for charging— due to lack of electrical plugs— caught me completely off guard.

Although I’ve explored remote islands before, none were as devoid of modern amenities as Mumbo Island. For someone not particularly interested in being "unplugged," this forced disconnect was a somewhat daunting experience. However, it offered a unique opportunity to truly be present with the others on the island.

The first night was a lesson in simplicity. I initially found it unsettling that we were surrounded by darkness (the only light coming from a solar-powered flashlight that attracted bugs)—especially since I still needed to take a shower in the minimal accommodations. But when we woke up to a perfect view of the sunrise, I was able to see how this could be a transformative experience—a chance to slow down, disconnect, and embrace the island's natural beauty.

Looking back, Mumbo Island offered time for introspection and appreciation for life's essentials. The crystal water and lush forest combined with its lack of wifi (and lack of people) provided an escape from the daily noise. Our time on the island challenged my perception of relaxation and connectivity. Despite being disconnected from the online world, I found connection in the physical world and with those around me, deepening my relationship with myself in the process.
